SANCTUARY READY — KNOWLEDGE VAULT READ THIS FIRST Version 3.0 | 6 September 2026 WHAT THIS IS The Sanctuary Knowledge Vault is an offline library for USB drives, SSDs, laptops and future Sanctuary Nodes. It combines Sanctuary-authored preparedness material with large third-party offline knowledge archives obtained from their official sources. V3 expands the vault into a broader Civilisation Dataset: survival, medicine, encyclopedia, history, mathematics, science, engineering, computing, food/growing, construction/utilities, maps/navigation, language, education, civics, culture, children/family and community operations. THE WEBSITE IS ONLY THE FRONT DOOR The public Knowledge Vault page intentionally stays simple. Detailed file names, versions, licensing, exact byte sizes and build logic live in the Advanced Catalogue and JSON manifests. LARGE ARCHIVES ARE NOT HOSTED BY SANCTUARY/VERCEL Wikipedia and other ZIM archives can be tens or hundreds of gigabytes. Sanctuary keeps the plan, manifest and resolver; large binaries are downloaded from the official source. ============================================================ 1. CHOOSE A STORAGE PROFILE ============================================================ Every V3 profile reserves approximately 10% of labelled drive capacity for archive growth, indexes, checksums, manifests and user files. The resolver measures the current remote file size before claiming that a set fits. ESSENTIAL — 64 GB - Sanctuary Field Manual and local plans - compact English Wikipedia - dedicated human-history archive - selected dictionary / education / practical reference where current sizes fit - safe content budget: 57.6 GB CORE — 128 GB - full-text English Wikipedia without images - Wikisource primary texts - Wiktionary - selected textbooks / education / practical reference - safe content budget: 115.2 GB COMMUNITY — 256 GB - visual English Wikipedia - Wikisource and Wiktionary - education, repair and travel/geography reference where current sizes fit - safe content budget: 230.4 GB DEEP COMMUNITY — 512 GB - Community core - wider medicine, science, computing, repair, engineering, education, maps and books - safe content budget: 460.8 GB CIVILISATION — 1 TB - broad coverage across all 17 knowledge domains - full visual encyclopedia, history/primary sources, technical material, medicine, education, books and maps - safe content budget: 900 GB ARCHIVE — 2 TB - preservation-class Node - additional languages, developer material, larger books, deeper technical/scientific collections and wider maps - safe content budget: 1.8 TB Archive sizes change. Do not assume an old screenshot or printed number still fits. ============================================================ 2. INSTALL KIWIX ============================================================ Official Kiwix Reader information: https://get.kiwix.org/en/solutions/applications/kiwix-reader/ Official Kiwix Library: https://library.kiwix.org/ Kiwix ZIM files are compressed offline websites/knowledge collections. Keep ZIM files intact; open them with Kiwix Reader or serve them with compatible Kiwix server software on a local Node. ============================================================ 3. USE THE V3 BUILD PLANNER ============================================================ From the Sanctuary repository root: npm run vault:plan:64 npm run vault:plan:128 npm run vault:plan:256 npm run vault:plan:512 npm run vault:plan:1tb npm run vault:plan:2tb The builder: - resolves the current approved Kiwix archive where possible; - measures remote bytes using HTTP metadata/range requests; - adds required content first; - adds optional archives only when they fit the profile budget; - keeps 10% physical headroom; - records skipped / unresolved content; - writes an exact JSON drive plan. For a strict build, add: --strict To allow the script to download selected Kiwix archives itself: --download Download mode requires aria2c and stops if required content is unresolved or the safe capacity budget is exceeded. ============================================================ 4. PAID, COMMUNITY AND PERSONAL CONTENT SETS ============================================================ A useful archive is not automatically legal to put on a paid Sanctuary USB. Use: --distribution paid --distribution community --distribution personal PAID Automatically excludes archive records marked noncommercial-only or rights-review. This is the safest default for a product Sanctuary sells. COMMUNITY Can include non-commercial material where the licence permits community/non-commercial use, but still excludes rights-review material until it is cleared. PERSONAL Can resolve the broadest set for a person building their own drive, but the user remains responsible for rights and licence obligations. IMPORTANT EXAMPLES - iFixit: CC BY-NC-SA — non-commercial. Do not preload on a paid Sanctuary product without permission. - OpenStax: current textbook licensing is non-commercial. Treat as community/personal unless permission is obtained. - PhET: standard simulations are non-commercial. Paid/fundraising product use requires permission. - Project Gutenberg: US public-domain focus and separate trademark/licence conditions. UK redistribution needs conservative rights review. - Kolibri: software is offline-first/open, but imported learning resources have their own licences. Approve content channel-by-channel/resource-by-resource. - Wikimedia/Kiwix: open licences apply, but attribution and licence metadata must travel with the archive. - OpenStreetMap: ODbL attribution/share-alike obligations apply to the database/derived databases. ============================================================ 5. VERIFY THE FILES ============================================================ Where a source publishes SHA-256 files, keep them with the archive. A master drive is not complete merely because a file with the expected name exists. Record: - archive filename; - official source URL; - archive version/date; - exact downloaded file size; - checksum result where supplied; - date verified; - licence and attribution information; - distribution profile used. Do not overwrite the only known-good master copy until a replacement archive has downloaded and verified successfully. ============================================================ 6. RECOMMENDED DRIVE LAYOUT ============================================================ README-FIRST.txt MANIFEST.json CHANGELOG.txt Sanctuary-Ready/ SANCTUARY_READY_FIELD_MANUAL_V2.md CIVILISATION_DATASET_V3_GUIDE.md HUMAN_HISTORY_VAULT_GUIDE.md household-plan.txt comms-plan.txt contacts-uk-gateshead.txt grab-bag-checklist.txt Kiwix/ ZIM/ Maps/ Education/ Licences/ Checksums/ Keep private household information separate from any drive or Node intended for public/community sharing. ============================================================ 7. HUMAN HISTORY ============================================================ Small drive: - dedicated Wikipedia Human History archive provides a compact historical reference. Larger drive: - full English Wikipedia already includes historical coverage, so the themed History subset becomes optional; - retain Wikisource because it provides primary-source texts rather than simply another encyclopedia subset. Use HUMAN_HISTORY_VAULT_GUIDE.md as the navigation layer. It covers prehistory to the modern era, all major world regions, thematic history and primary-source pathways. The archive should preserve provenance, competing perspectives and uncertainty. Sanctuary must not present one historical interpretation as a certified final version of human history. ============================================================ 8. THE 17 KNOWLEDGE DOMAINS ============================================================ 1. Emergency & survival 2. Medicine & human biology 3. General encyclopedia 4. History & primary sources 5. Mathematics 6. Physical & natural sciences 7. Engineering & repair 8. Computing & communications 9. Agriculture, growing & food 10. Construction & utilities 11. Geography, maps & navigation 12. Language & communication 13. Education & teaching 14. Law, government & civics 15. Literature, philosophy, religion & culture 16. Children & family 17. Community operations See CIVILISATION_DATASET_V3_GUIDE.md for the deeper scope and selection principles. ============================================================ 9. SNAPSHOT WARNING ============================================================ An offline archive is a snapshot. Do not rely on an old archive as current: - emergency instructions; - medical treatment guidance; - law; - active-war/conflict intelligence; - travel restrictions; - live weather; - prices; - current political office holders; - current public-service contacts. Use Sanctuary's source/freshness layer and current official information whenever connectivity exists. ============================================================ 10. UPDATE PROCEDURE ============================================================ When connectivity is available: 1. check the current official catalogue/source; 2. resolve archive versions and actual file sizes; 3. generate a fresh V3 plan; 4. confirm the selected set fits the safe content budget; 5. download through the official source/torrent; 6. verify checksums where supplied; 7. preserve licence/attribution files; 8. update MANIFEST.json and CHANGELOG.txt; 9. test a sample of archives in Kiwix; 10. only then mark the new master drive complete. ============================================================ 11. WEB-PAGE RULE ============================================================ The public Sanctuary page stays curated: - six storage tiers; - six simple knowledge layers; - a few featured core archives; - clear build/download actions. Everything detailed belongs in: - /resilience/knowledge/catalog - CIVILISATION_DATASET_V3_GUIDE.md - knowledge-vault-manifest.json - resolver-generated exact drive plans. The website should remain easy to understand even if the underlying vault eventually contains hundreds of archives. ============================================================ 12. FINAL RULE ============================================================ The Vault is not only for disasters. It is a persistent local-learning and knowledge-preservation asset that can remain useful when connectivity is weak, unaffordable or unavailable. Sanctuary Ready = practical survival + local participation + preserved useful knowledge.
